Diabetes Australia – Vic and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival invite all Melburnians to join them for a morning walk and healthy breakfast on Sunday 15 March to highlight healthy living and eating. The walk, which will take place around the City’s Tan Track between 7.30am-12 noon, will include five food stations at which participants can stop, graze, and enjoy a delicious and nutritious breakfast crafted by Diabetes Australia’s dietician. Walkers and joggers of all ages are welcome.
Breakfast around the Tan was conceived as a community event to celebrate the benefits of exercise and a healthy diet. What marks an exciting partnership between the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and DA–Vic, the event aims to create awareness of the need for all Australians to take an active role in managing their health. DA–Vic believes all of us – whether we live with diabetes or not – need to develop a deeper understanding and respect for fresh, local produce and incorporate these as we balance our daily nutrition.
“People with diabetes can enjoy a variety of food, drink and the occasional treat just like everybody else,” says DA–Vic dietitian team leader Jane Karpavicius. “There is no special diet for people with diabetes, moderation is the key.”
As well as breakfast stations laden with fresh produce and beautiful dishes, the event will also feature entertainment and appearances by DA–Vic Ambassador & yoga queen Sammy Veall as well as an army of chefs including Shane Delia (Maha), Adam D’Sylva (Coda, Tonka) Travis McAuley (Hellenic Republic), and Scott Pickett (Estelle, Saint Crispin), will be joining walkers to raise much-needed funds for this worthy cause.
The morning breakfast and walk will be one of the high points of this year’s Food and Wine Festival. More than 5000 people are expected to attend what is a first-time partnership between the Festival and a charity organisation.
More than 300,000 Victorians live with diabetes, and 74 people each day are diagnosed with diabetes. Although the rate of diagnosis has dropped by two per cent since 2011, awareness campaigns such as Breakfast Around the Tan are vital in the fight against this disease. With more than 500,000 Victorians at high risk of developing diabetes, DA–Vic and their friends at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival believe the fight for healthy lifestyles must continue.
