A perfect event for a cold Melbourne winters night. Tucked away in an industrial area of Collingwood, the T2 Chai Championship bought the soul of India into the heart of Melbourne.

A colourful celebration of Chai, a playful display of tea and spice in all it’s delicious glory. Greeted by the T2 team, live indian music and the sweet aroma of sugar and spice and all things nice. Armed with a T2 tin, we were encouraged to created our own Chai tea from a decadent selection of spices and infusions. From Star Anise, Ginger Spice, Keemun, Chilli Flakes, Rose buds, Cardamon, Indian Spice, Chocolate Chips to Cocoa Loco, the options were endless.

The selection of Chai Teas to taste were also limitless. Banana bake, White Chai, Raving Rajah, Indian Spice, Organic Chai, Mumbai Maple, Sikkim Temi, Darjeeling, Sweet Spice Fizz, Ginger Nut Chai to name but a few.

For those wanting to get into the real spirit of India, henna tattoo artists were delicately painting a touch of India on hand. Looking around the room filled with marigolds, fresh fruit and street food, it was easy to think you had just stepped into an Indian spice market.

Competitors from Melbourne’s top cafe’s including Auction Rooms, St Ali, Proud Mary, Feast of Merit, Standing Room, Mighty Boy and Soldier On blended their finest for the judging panel. With a score card based on both taste and presentation, the line up of competitors was certainly a masterclass on beautiful blending! Michael Allen from Auction Rooms topped the judges marks and was awarded the prestigious T2 Chai Champion title.

Thank you T2, you’ve gained another Chai enthusiast.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll off to make some Ginger Nut Chai.
