THE TRUE COST OF BEING A PARENT IN 2019, THE ESSENTIAL BABY & TODDLER SHOW REVEALS 27% OF NEW PARENTS ARE LIVING ON LESS THAN $100 PER WEEK

  • A quarter of Aussies admitted to spending over $1,000 on a pram, despite 27% of parents citing financial stress as their number one concern post baby
  • Nearly half (48%) of respondents admitted to listening to peer reviews when making parenting purchasing decisions
  • 81% of parents have felt dissatisfied after purchasing a product and nearly two-thirds of parents admitted to purchasing a product that they didn’t know how to use
  • 22% new parents admitted to never treating themselves following birth of their baby, 64% admitted to it being as a direct result of becoming a parent

A recent survey commissioned by The Essential Baby & Toddler Show, presented by Wattle Health in conjunction with Kids Business Communicationsasked 1271 new parents to lift the lid when it comes to the pressure they feel when it comes to having the best a baby can get with 27% of parents citing financial stress as their number one concern post-baby.

Surprising findings highlight that over a fifth (22%) of new parents aren’t taking any time (or money) to treat themselves once baby has arrived, and over a quarter (27%) of Aussie parents admitted to surviving on less than $100 disposableincome a week.

In stark contrast over a quarter (26%) of new parents admitted to spending over $1,000 on a pram for their bundles of joy. In mounting pressures associated with parenting and in the age of the ‘insta-mum’, the struggle is real with 18% of respondents also stating that they spend the majority of this on eating out.

Christie Nicholas, Managing Director Kids Business Communications explains “Mums are the largely in charge of the household budget and are the key decision makers for products they need for their motherhood journey. Before making a purchase, they invest the time to research products, ask for recommendations from their personal networks, read reviews and process information to then decide if the brands will suit her needs. Time and time again, Mums tell us how valuable it is to combine their independent online research with face time with brands to find out more about the product and make the final purchasing decision.”

Nearly half of Aussie parents (48%) admittedly to listening to peer reviews when making parenting purchasing decisions. In light of this, it is perhaps surprising that over two-thirds of new-parents admitted to buying products that they didn’t even know how to use and over four fifths (81%) being disappointed by a product that they’ve purchased for their bub.
