Our suspicions have been confirmed as Melbourne is crowned Australia’s most popular domestic destination this coming Easter, beating every other capital city. With a vibrant nightlife, array of culture and friendly locals to boot, we’re not surprised that it’s pipped the likes of Sydney to the punch line.

The survey by HotelsCombined has also revealed that a portion of employees may extend their Easter long weekend with a sick day, as that 25 per cent of Melbourne employees admit to having called in sick to take a holiday or extend their holiday. Tut tut!

The findings come from a survey of a nationally representative, independent panel of 1000 adults living in Victoria conducted by an independent research agency[1] and commissioned by HotelsCombined (hotelscombined.com.au), the world’s leading hotel price comparison platform.

The survey results further reveal that Melbourne’s youngest workers opt to take sick days for holiday reasons, with 32 per cent of those in their 20s using sick days to extend or take holidays. This number drops consistently the older Aussie workers get: 26 per cent among those in their 30s, and 19 per cent of 40-somethings, compared with just 15 per cent of over-50s.

Bookings data from HotelsCombined reveals Aussie families will likely be visiting extended family over Easter, with Sydney and Melbourne CBD as the most popular Easter destinations.

The forecast is based on the volume of bookings by Aussie holidayers from Good Friday to Easter Monday last year through HotelsCombined, which attracted nearly five million bookings in 2016 alone.

Melbourne is living up to its name as the most liveable city, which we can’t help but raise a glass to!
