On Saturday 1 November 2014, AAMI Victoria Derby Day, Melbourne Social 101 had the privilidge of being invited to the Birdcage by Flemington VRC and Schweppes. The team was delighted to see that Bar Schweppes returned for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

This year,  it was clear to see that Bar Schweppes has taken its inspiration from one of the hottest, current trends in food and cocktails – the American Deep South. Conjure up images of New Orleans Bourbon Street, Louisiana creole and smoky South Carolina and Texan barbeque, all wrapped in an authentic Deep South-style bar.

Bar Schweppes serves bespoke cocktails created by Melbourne’s best bartenders from Black Pearl, Le Bon Ton and Seamstress. The handpicked bartenders sourced from Melbourne’s finest bars means the cocktails and level of service really is unparalleled.

Partnering with Diageo and its premium spirits range, Bar Schweppes serves Deep South-inspired cocktails alongside Melbourne Cup Carnival’s signature cocktail, the Schweppes Flemington Fling.

Made using hand-cut ice, an array of fresh produce and Schweppes Mixers, the cocktail menu is the best in The Birdcage.

The menu features dishes from newly opened Bluebonnet Barbecue and Meatmaiden, alongside Melbourne favourites Le Bon Ton and Meat Mother. Pulled pork, slow cooked brisket, mac and cheese, and Texas chilli will complete the experience of a true Deep South bar.

The design of Bar Schweppes gives a nod to Plantation Style and French provincial architecture with dark wood flooring, hanging mirrors, and touches of brass and stone featured within. The outdoor terrace allows guests to sip cocktails in the sun and people-watch while a brass ensemble will perform R&B-meets-Deep South remixes, and DJ Andy Murphy will mix his signature sounds from 2pm – 6pm each afternoon.
